ABSTRACT
Introduction: assessment of pain is very important and must be part of the care of any patient, especially for newborn infants. Objective: to determine the effectiveness of dextrose and breastfeeding on pain relief in newborns.
Methods: experimental, prospective and longitudinal study was conducted in the Neonatal Care Unit at Abel Santamaría Cuadrado General Teaching Hospital, Pinar del Rio during the years 2011-2014. The universe comprised 200 newborns admitted to the Neonatal Care Unit undergoing to specific painful procedures. The sample was intentionally selected and included 60 infants meeting the inclusion criteria and divided into three groups: breastfeeding (1) control group (2) and 30% dextrose-group (3). Givens scale was applied before, during and after each group undergoing to painful procedure. Descriptive statistics was used: analysis means, standard deviations and T-tests to differentiate the means, besides chi square (χ2) test with probability p= 0.5.
Results: term infants (58%) predominated, male sex (68%) and good birth weight (70%). The average scale of Givens was 10.76 points, intense pain (73.3%). Dextrose showed greater analgesic efficacy with a probability of 0.473, versus breastfeeding (0.201).
Conclusions: in newborns undergoing painful procedures using dextrose in relieving pain proved to be more effective than the use of breastfeeding. It was incorporated in the new protocols for the newborn care aimed at the excellence and care humanization.
