ABSTRACT
Introduction: the
Kielmeyera rubriflora Cambess, belongs to the
Clusiaceae family.
It is a native plant to the Vale do Jequitinhonha in Minas Gerais in Brazil. It is used in
folk medicine, however, so far there are no publications of pharmacological studies
regarding this.
Objective: to evaluate the anxiolytic effects of K. rubriflora extract on the central
nervous system of mice.
Method: the crude extract of the aerial parts was administered acutely by gavage at
doses of 100 mg/kg, 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg in albino Swiss, males mice, between
9 and 13 weeks of age, weighing between 25 and 40 g. Spontaneous movement,
potentiation of sleeping time induced by barbiturate, hole board and the elevated plus
maze testes were performed.
Results: the duration of sleep was not significantly altered by any of the doses of
extract. The ambulation was significantly higher at doses of 100 and 500 mg/kg,
suggesting an anxiolytic effect, and significantly lower at a dose of 250 mg/kg
suggesting sedative effect. In the elevated plus maze test, there is less time spent in
the closed arms with doses of 100mg/kg and significant increase in open arm entries
with doses of 250mg/kg suggesting anxiolytic activity. In the hole board test, head
dipping decrease significantly with doses of 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg suggesting
sedative action and significant increase in head dipping with doses of 100 mg/kg
suggesting anxiolytic action.
Conclusion: the data suggests sedative and anxiolytic dose-dependent action of the
crude extract of
K.rubriflora.
