ABSTRACT
The most common injury of the ankle in sports is ankle sprain. Lateral instability is the major mid and long term complication.
Objectives: To review comprehensively the most recent and representative literature on lateral ankle instability secondary to a sports injury. The review focuses on the classification of the injuries and the latest treatments directed to functional recovery.
Results: An anatomical repair is indicated for grade I lesions, whereas for grade II and III injuries a non-anatomical or anatomical reconstruction is recommended. The use of allografts has a very unique usefulness to preserve anatomical integrity of the limbs in athletes.
Conclusions: The mechanism of the lesion should be known, as well as the biomechanics stressing the ankle for any given sport, in order to return the athlete to his/her activities by means of surgical or non-surgical methods.
