ABSTRACT
Introduction: Tuberculosis remains an important health problem worldwide, the
persistence of this disease in public health indicators makes it a threat to the health
of people in charge of the care of patients living with the disease, as well as the
community in general.
Objective: To describe the factors that influence positivity of the tuberculin skin
test in healthcare workers during 2012 in Bogotá.
Methods: Quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted. An
multiple correspondence analysis of a database supplied by the competent health
body, which recorded the performance of 2,552 tuberculin skin tests in health
workers during May and December 2012 in Bogotá.
Results: Sixty five percent of tuberculin skin tests were yielded negative results,
21 % unknown responses and 14 % positive ones. As for professions with highest
percentage of positivity, nursing staff with 44 %, and the medical staff with 15 %
were the main ones whereas the lowest positivity professions were clinical lab staff
with 4.4 % followed by odontology staff with 3 % and managing staff with 2 %.
Conclusions: The positive results in the test are directly associated to workers
having direct and frequent contact with agent
Mycobacterium Tuberculosis.
