ABSTRACT
Introduction: The literature reports that the
sociodemographic factors are of great importance
when studying the cognitive component in the
elderly.
Objective: To determine the association
of sociodemographic factors on cognitive
performance in a group of older adults.
Methods: This is an observational, quantitative
study. The sample was composed of 426 elders.
The type of sampling was non probabilistic, as
per convenience and quotas (in each commune)
stratified by age and sex. It was applied a
demographic survey and the mini-mental state
examination (MMSE) to assess the cognitive level.
Results: The population presented a demographic
profile whose characteristics converge towards
greater prevalence for the female gender and
socioeconomic status belonging to a category one
and two. By using the MMSE, a significant proportion
of patients can be located in the category of normal
performance. Sociodemographic factors that
showed a significant relationship with cognitive
performance were age and education.
Conclusions: The most influential
sociodemographic variables with respect to
cognitive performance in normal aging are age
and education; the latter was decisive for clinical
classification with respect to MMSE performance.
