ABSTRACT
Endoscopy currently has a key role in the diagnosis and treatment in
Otolaryngology. That is the reason why functional endoscopic surgery
is the procedure most commonly performed nowadays for the treatment
of inflammatory and tumoral sinus disease, in both adults and children.
Several reports in the literature mention a negative impact on the development
of the bony skeleton of the midface in pediatric patients after
undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery. It is also important to consider the
anatomical differences in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus in adults
and pediatric patients, as the development and pneumatization of the
sinus cavities continues throughout childhood, in addition to the surgical
challenge of laying low space and adjacent structures. Even today
there is controversy on surgical indications for a sinonasal endoscopic
surgery in pediatric population as well as the type of approach and the
extent of the procedure to be applied in each case plus the adjuvant
treatment, indicated according to the etiology. In this study, a systematic
review of the literature was conducted in search of the latest evidence
of the outcome and impact of endoscopic sinus surgery in pediatric
patients to determine the indications, safety and efficacy, in addition
to its potential impact on facial growth.
