ABSTRACT
This article reviews the role of the hippocampus in
memory processing and its deterioration during
aging in humans and animals, where even the
neurochemical mechanisms underlying the decline
in mnemonic ability are in process of understanding.
Some aspects of the physiology of hippocampal
will be developed, the type of memory depending
on the hippocampal function will be discussed, and
the molecular pathways that regulate memory
function will be studied. Finally, it will be discuss
the involvement of these mechanisms in the
deterioration that occurs with this cognitive
function during aging. It is concluded that the
evidence suggests that deregulation of several
signaling pathways, among which plays a central
role the brain-derived neurotrophic factor, explains,
ultimately, deterioration of memory in senescent
organisms.
