ABSTRACT
Introduction: Secondary peritonitis is a condition with a high mortality and remains one of the biggest problems facing by doctors and patients. Objective: To establish association between predictor factors and mortality of patients with secondary peritonitis.
Method: An observational, analytical, longitudinal, retrospective study of cases and controls in the intensive care service was performed at "Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola" Hospital, Ciego de Avila from November 2013 to February 2015. The universe was made up by 54 patients who were hospitalized with a diagnosis of secondary peritonitis. The independence technique was used based on the distribution of Chi square, t-test for independent samples in variables and calculation of odds ratio.
Results: In univariate analysis the variables that were significant and therefore associated with the risk of death were older age, the presence of malnutrition, shock, mechanical ventilation needs, the lower value of total protein and albumin as well as the higher value of creatinine. The shock, malnutrition and albumin variables were included in the multivariate predictive model which presented excellent performance indicators and correctly classified nearly all patients in the study.
Conclusions: The association of prognostic variables with mortality in patients with secondary peritonitis was demonstrated.
