ABSTRACT
Depression is a syndrome where affective symptoms predominate; however, cognitive, volitional and somatic symptoms may be present, so there is an overall impairment of the psychic sphere. This research is an analytical observational cross-sectional study with cases and controls, conducted with the aim of determining the level of knowledge and attitudes towards depression and genetic research and to design a strategy of genetic counseling for the disease in the municipality Ciego de Avila, from September 2011 to October 2012. A total of 100 individuals were selected through a stratified random sampling; information was obtained through a survey for data collection. Results showed insufficient knowledge of the disease by physicians, patients and families. Main depression symptoms were correctly identified by the evaluated groups without noteworthy differences. The main concern about genetic research was related to discrimination of increased genetic risk subjects by the rest of the population. However, there were statistically significant differences between specialists, family and patients in the acceptance of depression as a disease. Likewise, different attitudes towards predictive genetic testing and counseling were observed in students and specialists. Finally, a strategy of genetic counseling for depression study was designed, to be applied in the area of health consultations, based on the results of this research.REFERENCES
