ABSTRACT
A non-experimental cross-sectional analytical study with cases and controls in the Josue Pais Garcia polyclinic, from the Santiago de Cuba municipality was conducted in 100 individuals, including 30 clinically depression diagnosed patients and 70 unaffected subjects. The cases and their respective first-degree relatives were randomly selected from a database of families with depression. The study included 20 medical doctors and 20 medical students from the same health area. The purposes of the research was to explore patients and other individuals knowledge of depression and its relationship to genetic studies and to propose a Preventive-Educative Strategy for the disease in the primary health care level, based on basic elements of Genetic Counseling. A survey of 100 questions; the answers were entered into a database for statistical analysis, for which the Statistics v7.0 statistical software was applied. Results showed insufficient knowledge of the disease generally in all participants. 28% of subjects considered insufficient knowledge of depression but adequately answered the questionnaire, while 17% considered that knew enough the subject, but answered the questions insufficiently. Health professionals and medical students require more information about this disease, while patients and families need a more detailed guidance.
