ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe the frequency of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and associated factors in adult women beneficiaries of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) in Guadalajara. Material and methods: Cross-sectional study. 121 adult women treated in the IMSS between June 2014 and June 2015 were evaluated. MetS diagnosing was performed with NCEP-ATPIII criteria. The point prevalence was obtained. Participants were classified into two groups: with and without metabolic syndrome; a subsequent analysis of associated factors was performed. Results: The prevalence of MetS in this sample was 32%. Factors associated with the presence of MetS were smoking (OR = 8.1, CI 1.0-68.9, p = 0.02) and lower education (OR = 5.5 CI 2.2-13.5, p ‹ 0.001). Conclusion: The frequency of MetS in this sample of women is elevated. The increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease in the medium term in patients with MetS is known, and it is one of the leading causes of death in adult women affiliated to the IMSS. Efforts for prevention, early detection of the entities that make up the MetS and timely and continuous treatment are required.REFERENCES
