ABSTRACT
Alcoholism is a disease recognized by the WHO and has been the drug addiction most studied from a genetic perspective. To explore the role of genetic and environmental factors in this disease. A cross-sectional analytical case was performed through the analysis of familial aggregation testing on twins from Holguin town, during the January-March 2009 period. From the Cuban registry twins, those pairs with at least one alcohol addict (regardless of zygosity) were chosen. A concordance study was developed from the index case in first and second degree relatives, by comparing monozygotic versus dizygotic families. Non-genetic risk factors related with the disease were explored. The proportion of pair of monozygotic to dizygotic affected twins was 5:1. The 33.3 % of first-degree relatives of identical twins had alcoholism, while this rate was 19.5 % in dizygotic twins. The 18 % and 8.5 % second-degree relatives of affected monozygotic and dizygotic twins, respectively, were affected. Within the non-genetic risk factors the, most frequent ones were: psychological trauma, maternal smoking and perinatal complications. A greater concordance in monozygotic than in dizygotic twins and the presence of familial aggregation in first and second degree relatives, provide evidence for a genetic component of the disease.
