ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine familial functionality degree in the case of
pregnant teenagers, through the application of familial APGAR survey.
Methods: 364 pregnant women were randomly selected, ages between 12 to
19 years old seen al our Unit, between January 2001 and January 2002. Each
patient received a questionnaire, divided in two subjects: identification profile
and familial Apgar. Each family was classified as functional, moderate or severe
dysfunctional. The results were analyzed with descriptive statistics.
Results: 55% of the patients were 18 to 19 years old. 40% had elementary
school grade, 85% married, 77% housekeepers, 78% giving birth for the first time.
We found moderate familial dysfunction in 27%, severe in 6% and 67 %
were normal. Growth and affect were the most disturbing issues.
Conclusions: Familial functionality in pregnant teenagers is disturbed in 33% of cases, probably due to lack of emotional maturity, misperception of support and affection from their older members, thus forcing them to take the decision to follow their partners.
