ABSTRACT
Colorectal surgery is classified as a contaminated surgery, mechanical bowel preparation (PMC) is considered
necessary. It has been proposed the no mechanical bowel preparation strategy with favorable
results.
Objective: To compare the frequency of postoperative complications with two bowel preparation strategies
in pediatric patients undergoing colostomy closure.
Material and methods: observational, retrospective, comparative, analytical study. Total of 34 patients
divided into two groups undergoing elective colostomy closure, Group I: 25 patients with mechanical
bowel preparation (CPMI) and group II: 9 patients without mechanical bowel preparation (SPMI).
Results: Median age was 17 and 19 months in the SPMI and CPMI groups respectively. Found statistically
significant differences in the variables of hospital stay [6 days vs 10 days (SPMI vs CPMI)] with p =
0.007 and the feedings (4 vs 6 days) with p = 0.00039. No statistically significant difference was found
in the variables of time, bleeding, wound infection, residual abscess and anastomosis dehiscence.
Conclusions: SPMI strategy has better results in hospital stay and start of feedings, found no difference
in other variables related to the procedure.
