ABSTRACT
A transversal analytical study on osteoporosis and its influence on periodontal status of postmenopausal women was conducted, the sample consisted of 50 postmenopausal women divided into two groups: 20 of them with osteoporosis (group 1) and 30 without the disease (group 2). The variables studied were age, type of menopause, postmenopausal time, the degree of osteoporosis and the severity and extent of the loss of periodontal clinical insertion based on Charles´s index. Data were processed through the SPSS statistical package, version 11; statistical tests like Chi square, the Mann-Whitney, Fisher and the Kruskal-Wallis test were applied. All women with osteoporosis showed loss of periodontal clinical insertion extensively; in the group of women who did not have osteoporosis only a small part presented loss of periodontal clinical insertion. There was a proportional direct relationship between the degree of osteoporosis and the loss of periodontal clinical insertion; it did not happen over time of postmenopause. Natural menopause was predominant, age of 58 years and older and the period of postmenopausal from five to 13 years.
