ABSTRACT
Introduction: Staphylococcus aureus is the leading cause of bacterial infections involving the bloodstream, respiratory tract, skin and soft tissues, and it is one of the most common causes of community-acquired infections, with a high burden of morbidity and mortality.
Objective: Microbiologically characteriz
Staphylococcus aureus isolates recovered
from purulent samples taken from patients with community-acquired infections.
Methods: A descriptive study was conducted at "Fructuoso Rodríguez" Orthopedic Hospital from January to May 2014. 108 purulent samples were analyzed taken from
patients treated for outpatient service with no history of having been hospitalized in the previous year. These samples were applied microbiological conventional methods, and those which were diagnosed with
Staphylococcus aureus were determined antimicrobial susceptibility by the Kirby Bauer method and
E-test for vancomycin.
Results: Staphylococcus aureus was identified in 50.9% isolates and 94.6% of them
were obtained from skin infections and soft tissue. It was found that 25.5% of the isolates were resistant to methicillin. No strain resistant to vancomycin, teicoplanin and linezolid was found. The isolates of methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus
were significantly more resistant than
Staphylococcus aureus sensitive to amikacin, erythromycin and quinolones (ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin) aureus.
Conclusions: Staphylococcus aureus was the microorganism most found in the samples studied and it dominated skin and soft tissue infections. Recommendations are provided on the best treatment to be considered by family doctors when tackling patients with community infections.
