Elderly-care quality at General Peraza Nursing Home

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Increased longevity determine that most of the developed countries, and some developing countries, like Cuba, show signs of a life expectancy higher than 60 years, while fertility tends to decrease, which has dramatically changed the population pyramid. Our country is among the oldest populations in Latin America, 18.3% of the population aged 60 and older, with a tendency to increase in future years demanding increase in health services.Objective: Evaluate the care quality provided to elderly at institutions of primary health care.
Methods: An evaluative, descriptive and transversal research was conducted at 10 October municipality. The medical records of 66 patients selected at "General Peraza" Nursing Home were used as a source of information out of 135 hospitalized subjects in 2013. A previously validated form for assessing the elderly care quality was applied at nursing homes.
Results: Biomedical sphere variables were assessed, 75% were evaluated as good results. The multidisciplinary evaluation conducted by the Gerontological Care Team in this health area and at home was evaluated as poor. There is no Geriatrics in this institution. The nursing care process was rated satisfactory.
Conclusions: Care quality at this nursing home showed inadequacies in accordance with established standards, which demonstrates the low priority given to the elderly care in primary care.
