ABSTRACT
Introduction: Breast self-examination is a technique used by women, which enables to detect changes in their breasts in the early stages of the disease, allowing less invasive treatments and improving the quality of life of women affected. Objective: Characterize the level of knowledge on breast self-examination that women over 30 have in two health areas in Gaspar, Baraguá, Ciego de Avila. 2013.
Methods: Epidemiological, observational, descriptive and prospective research was conducted. The universe was composed by 127 women and 121 were the sample selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Empirical, theoretical and statistical processing methods as statistical software EPINFO 5 were integrated. A survey was used as the study instrument to women in the sample.
Results: 57.9% of women know what breast self-examination is. Only 31.4% selfexamined correctly, 21.6% said they do it monthly and 35.3%, after menstruation. 82.4% women received more information through medical consultations.
Conclusions: The highest percentage of women did not know what breast selfexamination is, and the way and frequency in which they must perform it; but the relationship with the menstrual period was found. Additional information was received by medical consultation.
