ABSTRACT
Objective: to compare the functionality level in elders with non-specific low back pain after subjected them to láser treatment with exercise
vs tens exercise.
Methodology: clinical, comparative randomized study, from patients of Gerontology Module, from ISSSTE´s Family Medicine Clinic "Dr. Ignacio Chávez". Simple randomization by lot was used to include patients into work groups, laser/exercise
vs tens/exercise. Owestry and Roland Morris scales were used. The visual analogue scale was also applied. Williams exercises were prescribed. The
analysis was made with Statistical Program SPPSS 18
th version, Wilcoxon and Student-t tests were used with 0,05 significance level.
Results: 43 were the total patients, 23 received tens/exercise treatment and 20 laser/exercise. From the total, 79.1% were females. Average age was 72 years old.
When analyzing the visual analogue scale scale, at the evaluation pre and post treatment, both groups decreased the pain intensity with significant statistical difference (p=0.000 for tens and p=0.001 for laser). When evaluating the patient’s functionality in both scales for the two groups, a significant statistical difference
was obtained.
Conclusions: the used of tens and laser combine with exercise, may be consider as a proper alternative in the treatment of chronic non-specific low back pain in the elder.
