ABSTRACT
Introduction: The management of the airway in obstetric patient is considered difficult because of the anatomical and physiological changes that occur during pregnancy and the potential risk of regurgitation. There are different predictors in assessing airway to help make a more complete assessment and improve their management decisions when intervention, some of these predictors may have particular characteristics in the obstetric patient is required.
Objective: To describe if changes occur in the classification of Mallampati and neck circumference in obstetric patients during labor.
Material and methods: This is an observational, descriptive and longitudinal study, which included obstetric patients in labor with gestational age greater than 38 weeks, who studied with normal evolution.
Results: 221 patients were studied. It was found that there are significant changes in Mallampati classification during labor with a p value of 0.001. Neck circumference suffers a decrease in the immediate postpartum period with a p value of 0.001. Both predictors showed statistically significant differences.
Conclusion: In the obstetric population in labor of IMIEM major changes in the Mallampati classification and neck circumference were shown during labor thus concluding that these predictors show a dynamic pattern. So that the assessment of the airway should be immediate to the anesthetic approach.
