ABSTRACT
Introduction: The liver transplant is the current treatment of choice for a large number of acute and chronic hepatic diseases, such as hepatic cirrhosis, in which there have been advances in the results due to the improvement of the surgical technique, the anesthetic procedure, intensive care, and the new immunosupressors; however it is still a challenge for the medical staff involved in this surgical activity.
Methods: A descriptive, prospective and observational study is presented, with a sample of 24 patients who were liver transplanted at the CIMEQ Hospital from January 2013 to December 2014. A group of variables were studied: age, sex, main pulmonary complications and mortality.
Results: Twenty nine point one per cent of the transplanted patients developed respiratory complications. Patients older than 40 years, females and patients with a diagnosis of alcoholic liver cirrhosis were the most liable to these complications. The infection of the respiratory tract was the main complication. Mortality accounted for 57%.
Conclusions: The number of respiratory complications has been reduced to values of 29.6% as compared to previous studies. The pulmonary infection was the main complication, and mortality was around 57% among patients with such complication.
