ABSTRACT
Introduction: difficulty breathing is one of the most frequent disorders in low weight newborns, it is the condition that most contributes, as an indication of mechanical ventilation in neonates. Objective: to determine the results obtained in mechanical ventilation and the use of pulmonary surfactant in low weight newborns.
Methods: a prospective, transversal, descriptive study was carried out during the period from January 2008 to December 2011, in the neonatal Intensive Care Unit at “Comandante “Manuel Piti Fajardo” Maternity Hospital. The universe and the sample were constituted by 103 low weight neonates, who received mechanical ventilation.
Results: the surviving of the studied newborns was 70,9%. The 37.9% of neonates was considered in term. Hyaline membrane disease prevailed with a 49, 6 %, and the highest number of children were ventilated in the first 12 hours of life, representing 93,2% of the total. A 23,3% of the children who did not receive surfactant, died, and the association of pulmonary hemorrhage could be appreciated in a 26,2%, followed by inter ventricular hemorrhage in 21,4 % as main complications.
Conclusions: the term low weight newborns showed best surviving; they began to be ventilated before their 12 hours of life and the administration of surfactant favored the surviving of the neonates, as well as complications such as pulmonary and inters ventricular hemorrhage decreased.
