ABSTRACT
Introduction: It is suggested that 20-40% of patients with epilepsy may suffer from psychiatric
disorders.
Objetive: To describe the existence of psychiatric entity and psychosocial disorders in patients
older than 18 years with epilepsy.
Methods: This is a descriptive, observational retrospective cohort study conducted in 216 adults
(+18 years) with epilepsy examined between December 2009 and June 2014.
The analysis of mental state, is performed by an open clinical interview the following tests:
Hamilton anxiety and depression scale Eysenck Personality, the Washington Psychosocial
Inventory (WPSI) and the scale of deterioration of Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS).
Sociodemographic information and biological variables of epilepsy (age of onset of the crisis,
duration of epilepsy, seizure frequency and types of epileptic seizures) was collected.
Results: The most frequent psychiatric disorders were: anxiety 71.3%; 69.9% depression;
61.1% unstable personality and deterioration of intelligence in 47.8%. The most common
psychosocial disorders were: 70.4% economically disadvantaged, poor adaptation to the doctor
and maladaptive 58.4% to 57.9% attacks treatment.
Conclusions: Given the high prevalence of psychiatric and psychosocial disorders patients with
epilepsy, it is proposed that the assessment in consultation of these patients also includes a
neurological examination, a set of studies to determine the most frequent psychopathological
disorders and their risk factors.
