ABSTRACT

Introduction: The term “comorbidity” is considered like the presence of two or more mental disorders on the same patient.
Objective: to explain in this study comorbidity from the dimensional point of view between the alcohol and the anxiety disorders.
Methods: A transversal and descriptive study with admitted male patients for alcohol detoxification was carried out in the Addiction Service of the ward “Rogelio Paredes” from the Psychiatric Hospital of Havana. The study was done during three years, from January 2011 to 2013. Neuropsychiatry Assessment System was applied (SCAN) in its section 5 and 11, as well as other scales. A sample of 70 subjects was taken with an average of age of 46.8 years old.
Results: Alcohol dependence was mainly characterized by daily intake, abstinence inability, a significantly tolerance to alcohol and mixed mental symptoms with 30.1 years- consumption. Anxiety symptoms were present in 50% of the studied patients and the presence of a strong relation with the generalized anxiety. Post-traumatic stress and somatization disorder were detected. The relation between the anxiety symptoms and the consumption time was significant.
Conclusions: In the studied sample comorbidity is present from the dimensional point of view between the alcohol and the anxiety disorders.
