ABSTRACT
Introduction: Several studies have found derangement of the quality of life in asthmatic patients, but in Mexican patients this issue has not been addressed.
Objectives: To assess the quality of life in patients with asthma of different severities.
Methods: A quality of life questionnaire (AQLQ) was applied to asthmatic outpatients attending the physician office of a third-level hospital devoted to respiratory diseases and located in Mexico City. This questionnaire has 32 items and measures four spheres (activity limitation, asthma symptoms, emotional function and environmental exposure).
Results: The questionnaire was applied to 115 subjects (69% women), who had severe asthma in 32.2% of them, moderate asthma in 33.0% and mild asthma in 34.8%. The three groups were similar with respect to their sociodemographic features, tobacco habit or duration of the disease. We found no differences among groups in any of the spheres of the questionnaire, excepting in the emotional function, in which patients with severe asthma showed more derangement than patients with mild asthma (p‹0.05) or with moderate asthma (p‹0.01).
Conclusions: Patients with severe asthma have more deterioration in their emotional status than patients with milder forms of the disease. Ideally, the physician must identify these patients in order to offer them the proper psychological support.
