ABSTRACT
Objectives: to characterize the therapy adherence and the social support of HIV/aids patients in a health area. Methods: cross-sectional study using quantitative methodology and conducted in a health area of 4 de Abril polyclinics in Guantanamo province from july 2012 to october 2013. The data collection techniques were semi-structured interview, MGB questionnaire for assessment of therapy adherence and social support questionnaire.
Results: partial therapy adherence was prevalent. From the structural viewpoint, the most affected component was the transactional relationship between the patient and the health team. The physician-patient relationship does not encourage the setting up of joint strategies to guarantee the compliance with treatment. The study yielded that HIV people included in the study showed high perceived requirement for social support, low grade of satisfaction with the received support and poor expectations of social support.
Conclusions: therapy adherence in the studied population manifests in its three levels, thus predominating the partial level of adherence. Social support was not enough and the perceived support is not satisfactory. Family is the main source of care for these patients and the emotional support and the company of other people are both necessary for HIV/aids people. They feel very insecure about the possibility of having some support if they will need it in the future.
