ABSTRACT
A short time after photography was invented, Eastman started using it as a tool for scientific work (1879). Ever since then, efforts have been made to turn photography into an indispensable means to project and illustrate science, so much so that scientific photography has paved the way for the development of digital photography. Writing a scientific paper requires profound knowledge about the topic in question. Careful observation of and research into daily dental practice would make that purpose possible. On the other hand, description is the most effective resource to convincingly present the start, evolution and final result of our work. Clinical dental photography would contribute to the accuracy and brevity required to better understand the topic dealt with. A presentation is made of the characteristics required from compact digital cameras to obtain optimal dental photographs, as well as techniques and tips to take intraoral and extraoral photographs.
