ABSTRACT
Introduction. Hospitals are complex systems responsible for providing specialized nursing care. The complexity of services and interventions makes them very expensive units for national health systems or to users who pay for their services and interventions in the case of non-State.Objective. Describe the economic losses of days left to perform surgery at the Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery for the years 2013 and 2014.
Method. A partial economic research cost description type classification was made according to Drummond et al. The data were obtained from the departments of surgery, medical records and economy of the institution. The causes of the days left to operate in tables are presented. The monetary unit used was the Cuban peso. Monte Carlo technique for uncertainty analysis was applied.
Results. The salary paid to physicians surgeons accounted for 46.40% of these. The days when no surgical procedures were performed in 2013 were increased by 57 and 13 by 2014. The total cost (salaries plus interventions) was 3 405 172.50 in 2013 and 4181 790.90 pesos in the year 2014.
Conclusion. Economic losses are an opportunity cost that the center stops investing in another option.
