ABSTRACT
Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) and coccidioidomycosis share epidemiological, clinical, radiographic, and even histopathological features, which can make the correct diagnosis extremely difficult in cases where both diseases coexist. We present two cases with coexistent TB and coccidioidomycosis, and afterwards discuss diagnostic and therapeutic issues.
Clinical cases: We present a case of pulmonary tuberculosis and disseminated coccidioidomycosis in a 17 year-old female, and a case of coexistent pulmonary TB and coccidioidomycosis in a 42 year-old intravenous drug user male.
Conclusions: In endemic areas for both diseases, the pertinent studies for diagnosing both ailments should be performed in every patient with compatible clinical features. The diagnosis of one of them, does not exclude the possible existence of the other.
