ABSTRACT
The acute respiratory syndrome is characterized by acute lung edema without left cardiac failure, hypoxemia of variable degree and development of bilateral pulmonary infiltrates in a chest X ray. It is characterized by extensive epithelial and endothelial damage with decreased compliance that requires mechanical ventilation assistance in most cases. Therapy might be oriented depending on the origin of the lesion. Lung protection strategies are the only therapy that has diminished mortality among patients suffering from acute respiratory syndrome. In this paper, we report a clinical case in which we highlight the complications due to lung insult and a presentation of new therapeutic strategies.
