ABSTRACT
Objective: to determine factors associated with insomnia and the probability of suffering
by the elderly.
Methods: cross-sectional study of elderly at family medicine units, with a sample of 399
individuals, the following instruments were applied; Folstein MMSE, Athens Insomina
Scale AIS, Yesavage scale for depression and Katz index for activities of daily living.
Using bivariate and multivariate analysis and probability calculation the association
between insomnia and included variables was established.
Results: the prevalence of insomnia was 40.6 %. Association with insomnia was found
in 53 % of patients with polypharmacy, in 42 % of patients with comorbidities and in 68.5
% of patients with depression. The highest probability of having insomnia is 97.4 %
when there polypharmacy, comorbidities and depression.
Conclusions: the problems identified in the elderly, compared to insomnia is its high
frequency and little attention, being equally important that most of the etiologies in this
group are secondary to comorbid conditions, that may be undiagnosed and therefore
must be addressed as a symptom and not a disease and to investigate the likelihood of
insomnia according to certain characteristics of the elderly.
