ABSTRACT
The genus
Aeromonas is a member of the family Aeromonadaceae. Human infections caused by
Aeromonas are rare and include gastrointestinal diseases, infections of skin and soft tissue, pneumonia, meningitis, endocarditis, osteomyelitis and septic arthritis. Infections of skin and soft tissue are second in frequency affecting human after gastrointestinal infections. The associated risk factors include exposure to fresh water or salt in injury from trauma, in patients with immunodeficiency, the use of leeches for medicinal and therapeutic purposes in infected chronic ulcers or decrease venous stasis in peripheral vascular disease. Diagnosis is based on isolation of the bacterium in the mainstream media and the treatment is directed towards debridement, surgical scrub and specific antibiotics causing severe sepsis and septic shock in susceptible patients. This paper reviews the gender
Aeromonas infections of the skin and soft tissues.
