Nutritional state and risk factors in overweighed students from a public university of Chiapas, Mexico

ABSTRACT
Background: Obesity is a major public health problem, with a trend that has increased dramatically in recent years and affects all ages.Objective: To determine the risk factors that the overweighed students from the University of Science and Arts of Chiapas and to take corrective actions to avoid health complications in the long-term.
Material and method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was done in university overweighed students. Through a questionnaire, information about health and eating habits was obtained. The variables analyzed include: physical activity, alcohol consumption, smoking, waist circumference and frequency of food consumption.
Results: 123 students were studied, of which 62% (n=76) of youth were male, with an age of 17-25 years old. 47% of students had a family history of overweight and obesity. The 72% did no exercise. Regarding addictions, 20% reported smoking and 20% reported consuming alcohol. As waist circumference, 63% of young people had a waist circumference ›94 cm and ›80 cm (in men and women, respectively). While the frequency of food consumption was found that 75.5% of students did not carry a varied diet.
Conclusion: According to the frequency of food consumption, it was identified that food of these young people is not varied, it is of poor quality and indicates the presence of bad eating habits, becoming a behavior health risk because, coupled with the sedentary and overweight, determine a long-term serious public health problem.
