ABSTRACT
Background: many patients that underwent intestinal ostomy surgeries unaware of
the post-surgery changes that are faced after surgery as eating habits, way of
dressing, and changes associated with sexuality. Thus it is important that nurses
provide information that will help the patients with these changes, mainly to ensure
the continuity of care after discharge.
Objective: to identify and analyze the scientific productions about nursing
interventions aimed at preparing patients with intestinal stomas to be discharged.
Method: this paper is an integrative literature review. The search was performed in
databases Medline, Web of Knowledge, CINAHL and Lilacs. It was included articles in
Portuguese, English and Spanish, published from January 2000 to August 2014. The review sample consisted of 26 articles.
Results: among the 58 interventions identified highligthed the incentive to self-care
and the provision of written information about home care. The encouragement of selfcare
has been related to the combination of different teaching strategies, such as how
to provide written information, to demonstrate the basic procedures, in addition, to use
and easy language to understand.
Conclusion: It was found that most interventions has been related to the physical
care and few of them has been addressed to psychosocial aspects in ostomy patients.
