ABSTRACT
Introduction: In order to study the air pollution from a social perspective, the aim of our work was to describe the perception of the air pollution by adult population of Mexico City. Material and methods: We studied 394 subjects, selected by a poly-stage conglomerate. Results: From the 394 subjects, 149 considered public security and 127 air pollution as the most important problems of Mexico City. Ninety-three per cent considered air pollution a very high risk to the health. Eighty-nine per cent held air pollution as responsible for eye irritation. Regarding information given to the public by the Metropolitan Environmental Commission, 18% thought it to be true and 47% thought it is manipulated. Discussion: The multiple logistic regressions analysis showed that gender and education modify the perception of our surveyed population sample. We consider that our study can contribute to government plans of solutions, in view of the air pollution problem in Mexico City.REFERENCES
