ABSTRACT
The hormonal system of vitamin D is essential in the homeostasis of calcium and phosphorus, and the regulation of bone resorption and formation, exercising its multiple effects in systems such as the target organs and tissues, including intestines, kidney and bone. Significant effects of vitamin D on muscle strength and mass have recently been described, and it has been positively associated with increment and preservation of skeletal muscle tissue. The metabolites of vitamin D directly influence the maturation and formation of the muscle cells through the vitamin D receptor (VDR), and its deficiency has important effects on these factors, causing muscle weakness, which leads to a decrease in functionality. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the effects of vitamin D on skeletal muscle tissue and muscular strength.
