ABSTRACT
The mediastinum is a frequent site of origin of tumors and masses of diverse etiology, and it therefore constitutes an area of great interest to specialists in neumology, thoracic surgery, oncology, general practice, internal medicine and general surgery, among other fields. Most are discovered serendipitously on chest roentgenograms. We briefly review the relevant aspects of the clinical diagnosis of 458 tumors and masses of mediastinum studied in our department by imaging and other procedures during an 8 year period, which ended September 30, 2001, as well as the basic aspects of integral treatment. In our series, 76% of tumors and masses were malignant, 18.34% showed superior vena cava syndrome, 22.7% were lymphomas; these represent 29.8% of the malignant tumors of the mediastinum.
