ABSTRACT
Introduction: among contraceptive methods, the spermicides are compounds that kill or inactivation of spermatozoa during their passage through the female
reproductive tract. Making use of traditional medicine, we selected the following plants
Physalis peruviana L. (Solanaceae),
Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf. (
Poaceae),
Melicocca bijuga (Jacq.) L. (Sapindaceae),
Dianthus caryophyllus L. (
Caryophyllaceae), and
Sapindus saponaria L. (Sapindaceae).
Objective: to evaluate the spermicidal and cytotoxicity effect of extracts of plants
and design a pharmaceutical preparation in gel.
Methods: sperm motility and viability were evaluated after incubation with extract from each plant: fruit, stems and leaves of
P. peruviana; stems and leaves of
C. citratus; fruit and shell of
M. bijuga; as stems and leaves of
D. caryophyllus and
S. saponaria previously dried at 37 °C for 12-24 hours. Finally, a pharmaceutical preparation in a gel form was used as a base to add the extracts of stems and
leaves of
D. caryophyllus and
S. saponaria and the effect on motility and viability were evaluated.
Results: extracts reduce sperm motility and viability and have a lower cytotoxic effect on HeLa cell line. Carnation extract has the best effect on those parameters. Preparations of spermicidal gels reduce sperm motility; however also affect the viability when the extract of carnation was added.
Conclusions: the pharmaceutical preparation in gel form that includes the extract of the stems and leaves of the plant
Dianthus caryphyllus L. (carnation) have
spermicidal activity with lesser cytotoxic effect.
