ABSTRACT
Introduction: Ericaceae family includes 4500 species distributed in neotropical regions, Colombia is the country with the highest number of
Ericaeae species mainly distributed in Andean forests, these are characterized by ecological, medicinal and food importance.
Objective: preliminary phytochemical study and to evaluate the
in vitro antioxidant activity and toxicity against
Artemia salina in extracts of
six species of Colombian
Ericaeas.
Methods: from the
Cavendishia bracteata (Ruiz & Pav. ex J. St.-Hil.) Hoerold,
Gaultheria erecta Vent,
Thibaudia floribunda Kunth,
Macleania rupestris (Kunth) A.C. Sm,
Bejaria resinosa Mutis ex L. f. and
Disterigma alaternoides (Kunth) Nied, were obtained the ethanolic extracts, performed the preliminary phytochemical analysis and determined the total concentration of phenols and flavonoids by colorimetric methods. The toxic activity was evaluated in the
Artemia salina assay and the antioxidant activity for DPPH radical scavenging.
Results: preliminary phytochemical analysis showed the presence of phenols, flavonoids, tannins, coumarins, terpenes, steroids and quinones. All extracts tested except the green fruits of
C. bracteata have high concentrations of total phenols and flavonoids. The leaf
extracts
G. erecta and
D. alaternoides and flowers
T. floribunda showed stockings toxicities with LC50 229, 173 and 196 ppm against
Artemia salina. Extracts of
G. erecta,
C. bracteata and
T. floribunda possess promising antioxidant activity (IC50 50.61, 62.88 and 69.46 respectively), to compare with others antioxidants such as gallic acid and ascorbic acid.
Conclusions: this study revealed the presence of a high content of phenolic compounds such as flavonoids, quinones and tannins. Furthermore leaf extracts from different species showed promising antioxidant activities and low toxicities.
