ABSTRACT
Introduction: Cochlear implant is one of the modern technologies that generates high expectations and hopes for the deaf patient who cannot be helped with any auditory amplification. Material and method: The present work revised 63 files with 109 questionnaires where the family and candidate expectations for cochlear implants were analyzed, in different atmospheres such as silent or noisy places, language therapy, etc. Objective: To analyze the expectations of a cochlear implant in the relatives and candidates to this procedure. To determine the highest expectation regarding the use of implants and the most frequent doubts. Results: For patients of ages between 2 and 75 years, both men and women, the relatives and patients considered that this surgery would end their disabled condition, which is erroneous since the implant is only an aid, and any failure will maintain the hearing loss. There is no understanding of the phases required to get used to the new sound. All patients accepted the need of rehabilitation, 70% admitted that a long period is necessary for the acquisition of language, 60% do not understand how a noisy or a silent atmosphere will sound, 50% of the patients believed that once connected they would understand the television and 40% thought they would be able to talk on the phone immediately after programming. Fifty percent were not interested in music. Conclusion: Before initiating a cochlear implant program it is necessary to reinforce the pre-operatory information and to stress the phases of language acquisition.REFERENCES
