ABSTRACT
Introduction: obesity is known as an independent risk factor of heart failure, which has reached epidemics proportions: The World Health Organization reckons
that more than one billion adults in the whole world are overweight and 300 millions of them are clinically obese, however, in the last years it is observed a paradoxical phenomena, obese people with heart failure have les mortality.
Objective: characterize the behavior of the body mass index in relation to the mortality in patients with heart failure after one year follow-up.
Methods: a descriptive study was conducted in 176 patients assisted in the heart failure protocol consultation at "Hermanos Ameijeiras" Hospital, from January 2006 to May 2012. The primary data was obtained from the follow-up protocol form of patients with heart failure. Patients with heart failure of ischemic and hypertensive causes, with no symptoms or congestive signs were included in this study.
Results: obese and overweight patients died less than normal weight patients, functional class III predominated, there were no differences in ejection fraction of the left ventricle between groups.
Conclusions: overweight and obesity were protective factors in individuals with heart failure, in connection to mortality at one year follow-up.
