ABSTRACT
Rationale: Urinary creatinine excretion might be a useful indicator in studies of the changes occurring in
the human being with aging.
Objective: To describe the behavior of urinary creatinine excretion in Cuban elders subjects (Ages ≥ 59 years).
Material and method: Values of urinary creatinine excretion were obtained from 133 subjects (Women: 60.9%) with preserved kidney function, serum creatinine ≤ 128 µmol.L
-1, adequate values of weight for height, and complete 24 hours urine collections.
Results: In subjects with ages ≥ 59 years, urinary creatinine excretion represented 70% of the values obtained for reference individuals. Annual rate of change in excretion of urinary creatinine was dependent upon sex: Men: 6.3 milligrams.year
-1 vs. Women: 9.3 milligrams.year
-1.
Conclusions: Excreted quantities of creatinine in urine diminish as the subject ages. Sex might affect the annual rate of change in urinary creatinine excretion. Paucity of data should prompt to caution in the interpretation of the presented findings until the conduction of prospective studies and higher sample effectives.
