ABSTRACT
Mexico has been recognized internationally for its contribution to the study and treatment of patients with cleft palate and lip. This continues to be a topic that justifies the organization of national and international multidisciplinary courses, congresses, books and journals especially dedicated to this subject. In this country a high incidence of cleft patients and a significant backlog in their integral treatment prevails. Credit is shared by countless Mexican surgeons, but, thanks to the initiative of Professor Dr. Fernando Ortiz Monasterio creating a specific model of attention of the marginalized patients in their own localities by means of mobile units which travel around the country, with adequate control and follow-up. For the last forty years this model has been followed by many surgeons who have treated thousands of patients. The great challenge for the future is to use the existing infrastructure while adapting it using new models with better quality controls and a multidisciplinary approach. Mexico has been recognized for this contribution in the study and treatment of cleft lip patients. In this work we present the evolution in Mexico from the beginning up to the present, when new multidisciplinary models such as Smile Train order to continue this noble task more efficiently.
