Causes of admission and procedures applied to patients in the municipal intensive care area of Guanabacoa, 2003-2010

ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the main causes of admission and the procedures applied to the patients assisted in the municipal intensive care area of Guanabacoa, from 2003 to 2010.
Method: A descriptive transverse study was carried out in intensive care area of “Ángel Machaco Ameijeiras” policlinic in Guanabacoa municipality, Havana province, Cuba, from 2003-2010. The cases treated, the deceased patients, causes for admission and medical procedures applied were analyzed.
Results: 3 009 patients were treated in the period, with figures ranging from 311 to 437 yearly. 100 died (3,3%) at a general rate. The stable angina predominated (11,6% of cases), acute myocardial infarction (10,2%), cardiac arrhythmia (10,2%), unstable angina (10%), cardiac failure (9,6%), hypertension (9,3%) and cerebrovascular disease (7,1%). The thrombolysis was applied to 222 (72,3%) of a total of 307 patients who had infarction.
Conclusions: Cardiovascular followed by cerebrovascular diseases predominated in the period studied. Medical procedures that guaranteed a high survival and possible recovery of the patients treated were carried out.
