Internationalization of higher education: academic international relations at Pinar del Río University of Medical Sciences

ABSTRACT
Introduction: the management process of Cuban university and the permanent close connection with the State, demands permanent actions to increase the relevance of its social mission through its involvement in the process of internationalization.Objective: to assess the current state of academic international relations at Pinar del Río University of Medical Sciences to promote the interest in the development of future researches and in order to provide solutions to the international management.
Material and methods: empirical and theoretical methods that allowed a logical thinking process and SWOT analysis as a problem-solving process by reviewing policy documents, reports of the economic results balance, interviews with executives and officials from the department of International Relations and the direction of postgraduate studies as direct subjects into the international management.
Results: the activity of product marketing and services were not developed from the academic institution. The management is conducted in a systematic and centralized way by the Ministry of Public Health through Cuban Medical Services. Computing platforms providing visualization and feedback to visualize the current academic potential are not updated. The specialized personnel have not a tool to regulate the performance of the international relations.
Conclusions: the existence of significant achievements in the training of human resources was determined, but the design and implementation of well-conceived and planned tools under the perspective of the direction are required.
