ABSTRACT
Dental care in cardiac children has often been relegated to a second position. Some authors have reported a significantly higher incidence of caries in cyanotic cardiac disease than in healthy children. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of caries in cardiac children at the Service of Pediatric Dentistry in the Instituto Nacional de Pediatría (National Institute of Pediatrics). The files of 158 patients with congenital heart disease were reviewed; 83 males and 75 females whose average age was 7.2 years. In primary dentition, there was a decayed, missing, filled index (DMF) of 8.2; in permanent dentition was 8.9, which was the highest index found in the three dentition types. The group with the lowest caries index was found in patients with mixed dentition: a DMF of 4.6 and a DMF of 2.3 .
