ABSTRACT
HIV infection is one of the most important medical
issues in Costa Rica, because of the high rate
of new cases that are diagnosed each month.
Among the main complications of this disease
we can find the cognitive impairment HIV related
and HIV related dementia is a wellestablished
clinical entity. Its proper diagnosis
allows a better response to the treatment, that is
the antiretroviral therapy. The main challenge in
the diagnosis workout is to give to each symptom
the importance that it deserves, because a lot
of the initial clinical patterns can be underestimated
for the patient and for the health workers.
In this paper, the general diagnostic workout for demential syndrome is assessed, as well as the
main features of the HIV related dementia.
