ABSTRACT
Introduction: Myofascial pain and trigger points are one of the most common causes of musculoskeletal pain. Recently, extracorporeal shock waves have joined to fight myofascial pain, because apparently they stimulate the healing processes, regeneration and repair in the affected muscle. We proposed as an objective, to see their effectiveness in a sample of our patients.
Material and methods: 29 patients with cervical myofascial pain criteria were subjected to an average of 4 sessions of shockwaves. The values of the visual analogic scale for pain and neck disability index were observed at pretreatment and one month after finalizing. Analysis of results made with SPSS v. 18.0.
Results: Values of the visual analog scale were upgraded from a average 7.14 to 3.59 aftercare. The Neck Disability Index went from a average of 42.40% at the beginning of the study, to 27.24% after a month.
Conclusions: The shock wave therapy is effective in the short term in cervical myofascial pain syndrome. In contrast, other long-term randomized studies will be needed to consolidate their use.
