ABSTRACT
Objective: to determine the relationship of the visual disorders and the level of functionality of the older adults. Methods: observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study conducted in the clinics of specialties Churubusco in Mexico City. A non-probabilistic sample of patients aged over 60 years, who went to the outpatient service of ophthalmology to be evaluated. Ocular pathologies were identified together with the determination of functionality for basic and instrumental activities of daily life through Barthol's index and Lawton and Brody's scale, respectively. Mann Whitney's and Kruskall-Wallis' U tests were used, being 0,05 the significance level; the used statistical program was SPSS version 18.
Results: average age was 70,94 years. Females accounted for 70,1 % of the sample. Glaucoma (62,8), cataract (32,3), diabetic retinopathy (15,1) and age-related macular degeneration (13,3) prevailed. Regarding comorbidities, 45,6 % of patients had diabetes mellitus of whom 3 % presented with diabetic retinopathy. When relating ocular disorders and functionality, statistical significance was found between instrumental activities of duly life and diabetic retinopathy (p= 0,009) and macular degeneration (p= 0,037).
Conclusions: age-related retinopathy and macular degeneration influence the performance of instrumental activities of daily life in older adults, so it is important to have timely diagnosis and treatment mainly in patients with risk factors such as diabetes mellitus.
