ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess the space perception by a standardized test proved for Mexican population and to correlate it with an endoscopic abilities test oriented toward nose and paranasal sinuses endoscopic surgery.Material and method: A study including 12 residents of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery specialty of Hospital Español de México, from first to fourth grade, who were submitted to Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), using specifically the space performance scale including the assessment of incomplete figures, digits and symbols, cube design, matrixes and draw ordering.
Results: The results of endoscopic ability correlated positively to the results of the items of performance tests of WAIS (p=0.0001). Pearson correlation test showed a significant correlation among variables.
Conclusions: Our study is the first that correlations the space ability with the endoscopic ability in the context of nasal endoscopic surgery. WAIS, validated for Mexican population, may be an invaluable tool for selecting subjects apt to surgical residencies, not as selection bias, but as marker of surgical capacitation.
